Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site and Deer Lodge

August 4, 2011
We left Billings MT around 7:15 a.m. Stopped at Pompey's Pillar National Monument. Climbed the many stairs to see William Clark's name and the date which he carved into the sandstone on the return trip down the Yellowstone River.
Traveled I90 to Medora and the southern section of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Viewed the film and toured the museum in the visitors' center. Drove a short while on the driving tour up to the Prairie Dog town. No Burrowing Owls. :-(
Saw the Chimney and remains of the meat packing plant in Chimney Park. Ate lunch at the Cowboy Cafe. Delicious potato soup.
In New Salem, we drove up to see Salem Sue, the giant statue of a Holstein cow.
On the way to Jamestown ND, we passed several areas which were still flooded. Frontier Town in Jamestown has a giant buffalo. We are at the KOA right on I94. It is like camping in a median strip.

Anaconda, Scenery on the Pintler Loop, Phillipsburg and candy shop, Drummond Burgers, evening weather.

August 3, 2011
This morning we after breakfast at the 4B's, Mary and Larry took us on a tour of the Grant-Kohrs Ranch Historical Site, where they are volunteering this summer. We went through the house,
flower garden, blacksmith shop, barn, where all the wagons, old farm equipment, sleighs, and various carriages and surreys are stored. Heard a short talk about the chuckwagon, and saw the bunkhouse. John tried to learn how to throw a lariat.
After lunch, including cheesecake and Larry's chocolate chip cookies, we left Deer Lodge, driving through town on the way east. We traveled as far as Billings, MT. We are at the KOA right on the Yellowstone River for the night.

We left Cd'A about 7:00 a.m. Traveled to Deer Lodge, MT. Met Mary Grovemiller and Larry Davis at their campsite there. We were about to set up our tent next to their RV.
We all piled into Larry's truck and set out on a tour of the Pintler Loop. It goes through Anaconda, Georgetown Lake, Phillipsburg, and Drummond. We stopped in Phillipsburg and visited a few shops, including a candy shop, where, of course, we bought a few goodies. We had dinner in Drummond at the place that makes 72 different kinds of burgers. It rained a few times off and on. We saw a rainbow, and by the time we returned to camp, the moon was out.

Our last day in Cd'A. That night all 8 of us went to the McKenzie River Pizza Company.
